Surgical Management of Lipodystrophy in Barraquer-Simons Syndrome: Autologous Fat Redistribution and Reconstructive Strategies for Acquired Partial Lipodystrophy
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Barraquer-Simons Syndrome (BSS), a rare form of acquired partial lipodystrophy, is characterized by progressive adipose tissue loss in the cephalothoracic region, often with paradoxical fat accumulation in the lower body. This condition presents significant metabolic and aesthetic challenges, necessitating multidisciplinary management. Fat redistribution surgery (FRS) has emerged as a potential therapeutic approach to restore facial and upper body contour while addressing metabolic complications.
Objective: This article reviews the surgical techniques, outcomes, and long-term efficacy of autologous fat grafting and liposuction-based fat redistribution in BSS patients, with a focus on optimizing functional and cosmetic results.
Methods: A comprehensive literature review was conducted, analyzing case reports, clinical studies, and surgical outcomes in BSS patients undergoing fat redistribution procedures. Special emphasis was placed on patient selection, surgical planning, and postoperative metabolic implications.
Results: Preliminary evidence suggests that autologous fat transfer from areas of lipohypertrophy (e.g., lower extremities) to atrophic regions (e.g., face, arms, and trunk) can improve both aesthetic and psychosocial outcomes. However, long-term fat graft retention remains variable, and metabolic stability post-surgery requires further investigation.
Conclusion: Fat redistribution surgery offers a promising reconstructive option for BSS patients, though individualized surgical planning and close metabolic monitoring are essential. Further prospective studies are needed to standardize techniques and assess durability.
